Arctic Weather

The Arctic is a region as enthralling in its beauty as it is inhospitable and unforgiving to those venturing into its chilly embrace. Nevertheless, an indigenous Inuit people have for millennia scratched out a living from this region, but it is only in the last 1,000 years, and then falteringly, that Europeans have paid any regard to it.

Fugitive Dust

This article describes a new approach, which aims to create bespoke modelling methods that are more refined for site-specific predictions.

Arctic Metrology

The polar environment is under a constantly increasing interest: climate change comes first and comes faster in the arctic. Multitudes of observations are needed to understand the environment and its evolution. The traceability of data becomes fundamental for the comparability of the many and different measurements’ results.

Stormy Weather

2012-11-27 EHS News: Report 1 Convective weather phenomena, such as summer thunderstorms, result from the rising and sinking of air masses. Their forecasting is generally part of ‘nowcasting’, which means th

Automatic Weather Stations [Mar 2012]

Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) are becoming increasingly popular in many applications owing to their becoming more affordable, reliable, having improved data logging capabilities and through the growth in personal computing bringing sophisticated data manipulation and archiving within the reach of all.

Weather Monitoring [June 2011]

For a long time weather monitoring was largely a pastime of enthusiastic amateurs, but over the last century it has evolved into a well organised and professional global activity that reflects its crucial importance for a wide range of economic, environmental, civil protection and farming activities.

Weather Monitoring And Global Cooling

Since we are considering climate change, it is necessary to go back as far as possible - to when meteorological measurements began around 1850. Instruments were then of simple mechanical design, read by observers. Even today most climate data still originate from such simple devices.

Weather Monitoring and Urban Air Quality

Being able to make good overall estimates, helps to control air quality and implement preventive actions to reduce emissions

Weather Monitoring [Mar 2008]

This article will give an overview of the most widely used meteorological sensors and their strengths and weaknesses. The word ‘sensors’ is here being used a little loosely and will sometimes include transducers, describing the conversion of the measured variable to another. There are innumerable sensor types in use and it is impossible to cover more than a fraction of them. This article does not go into detail concerning more elaborate measurements using optical sensors of parameters such as cloud or visibility nor does it deal with data logging or display, instead the focus is on the sensors commonly used in monitoring weather at or near the surface.

More Than Just Tomorrow's Forecast

For the fans of a particular brand of German chocolates, the critical limit is 27 degrees Celsius. The manufacturer in Frankfurt suspends its chocolate production if the temperature rises beyond its summer threshold. Otherwise, the company cannot guarantee the form, appearance and quality of its chocolates.

Monitoring and Forecasting The Weather

Providing predictions for the oceans, the dispersion of pollution, rainfall run-off, climate change and other environmental parameters. The Met Office is best known for weather forecasting. But, as well as a huge range of forecasts for a wide range of purposes around the globe, the Met Office also provides predictions for the oceans, the dispersion of pollution, rainfall run-off, climate change and other environmental parameters.

Always Take The Weather With You

Industrialised processes and society have had a damaging effect on our physical environment over the last few hundred years. There is now increasing evidence to show that they have also had an effect on our weather and its extremes; this is known as climate change. From increasing numbers of weather related catastrophic events, rising sea levels, to changes in our health, these changes in the UK and the world will affect us in a variety of ways.
