Chromatography is the science of separation, with the analyte of interest being in a mobile phase, passing through a series of stationary phases. This allows the analyte to be isolated for quantification through a wide variety of techniques. This article looks at how chromatography is used to separate the noble gas krypton from air.

Chromatography in Environmental Analysis

Gas chromatography (GC) is a technique used to separate the individual components of a complex mixture. A very small quantity of sample is needed (less than 1/1000th of a gram). The sample is injected onto one end of a chromatography column, down which gas (the carrier gas) is passing (usually helium or hydrogen). The column is situated in an oven. When the oven is cool (room temperature) only volatile compounds that boil at low temperature will evaporate from the sample and travel down the column to be detected at the far end by a detector. As the oven is heated, components of the mixture that boil at a higher temperature evaporate and are transported down the column by the flowing gas. In this way the components in the mixture are separated according to the temperatures at which they boil.

Recent Improvements in Chromatography

Improved instrumentation, greater sensitivity and faster analysis Chromatography is one of the main tools of the environmental analytical chemist in providing detailed information on hundreds of different organic compounds which may be present in the environment. A general introduction to chromatography was provided in this journal last year (Dec 06/Jan 07 issue), giving a description of the basic principles of chromatography and a number of different techniques available for use in the modern laboratory.

Chromatography Techniques

Current chromatographic techniques are founded on classical chemistry pioneered by a Russian botanist, Mikhail Tswett, at the end of the nineteenth century. He developed a method for separating complex plant pigments by producing different coloured bands on paper, which gave rise to the name chromatography, based on the Greek word chroma, meaning colour.
