Getting Ahead on Safety

Hans-Horst Konkolewsky of the Geneva-based International Social Security Association (ISSA) makes a convincing economic case for investment in safety and health equipment. Observed from an international perspective, this overview underpins the returns to be gained from wise investment in worker safety.

Safety in the Wind

Gas detection is the simple phrase used for ‘atmospheric testing’ or ‘atmospheric sampling’. The process involves capturing a sample of the atmosphere so it can be analysed to determine the percentage or amount of a particular substance in the atmosphere (the air we breathe).

Safety on the High Seas

Although there have been no work related deaths in the UK offshore industry for the last four years, health and safety professionals know that if disaster does strike it can have catastrophic human consequences.

Light, Health and Alertness

Medical and biological research of the last 25 years has shown that lighting has, apart from a visual effect, also a non-visual biological effect on the human body. With the detection in 2002 of a novel photoreceptor cell in the eye, the biological effects that light has on human beings can be better understood. A large number of research projects that compare the effects on health and alertness as a result of people working under different lighting conditions have been carried out. We demonstrate that it can be beneficial, both from a wellbeing and productivity point of view, to have dynamic lighting in the work situation, in which both the level and the colour of the lighting vary in the course of the day.

Occupational Noise and Health

Many countries in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) have experienced rapid economic and industrial development over the past few decades following the discovery and exportation of natural resources such as oil, gas and minerals.

A Real Emergency

Working in the offshore oil and gas industry for a very long time (more than 30 years) and meeting and working with people from different countries was a privilege. In the last offshore company that I worked with I was assigned to both the HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) group as well as to the Marine department, which encompasses rig moves, diving work hire and supervision of marine vessels and barges in addition to the oil spill combating activities.

Training [Aug 2011]

Demand for formal health and safety training has grown rapidly in the Middle East and Africa in recent years, according to Teresa Budworth, Chief Executive of health, safety and environmental examinations body NEBOSH. For this feature, Teresa explains how everyone in the workplace can benefit from some basic health and safety training, and looks at the training and qualification needs of health and safety professionals.

TRAINING - GET IT RIGHT!

Experience is no use without knowledge - and training may be flawlessly delivered but it’s no use if it is ten years out of date. Knowledge without experience is equally bad - understanding how knowledge is applied in practical situations is almost as important as the knowledge itself. To help overcome the issues around safety in the Middle East, region-wide action has been taken by governments to encourage director-level responsibility for safety management.

SAFETY AT WORK ON CONSTRUCTION SITES

As the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) projects’ market enters a new cycle of growth after the global crisis, the need for sustainable construction and safety in carrying out the work is pressing.

Why Don't People Follow the Rules?

In its 2002 report, the World Health Organisation estimated that up to 16% of hearing loss globally is attributed to workplace noise exposure. Despite an understanding of the exposure levels that create harm, rules and policies put in place to mitigate those exposures are all too frequently ignored.

The ABCs of Human Behaviour

Humans behave. We do things. We speak to each other and we take actions that others can observe, if they just take the time to look and listen. Even doing nothing is doing something. The fascinating thing about human behaviour is that we know a great deal about it. We know the ways to motivate people, we can test our theories to see if they work, we can observe the outcomes and we can help each other to have behaviours that increase our chances of being safe.

Training - Legislation and cultural expectations for a safe workforce

Maintaining high standards in health and safety training has never been more important. The annual worldwide work-related death toll is a staggering 2.2 million people, according to a report prepared by the United Nations’ International Labour Office. The injury/illness figure - more than 450 million worldwide, or about 1 in 8 of the working population - just doesn’t bear thinking about.

Planning Pays Off

Falls while working at height are all too common; the greater tragedy is that each fall is preventable. With around 2.3 million work-related deaths worldwide annually, with the construction industry accounting for about 60,000 of these fatalities, fall protection is moving higher up the agenda globally. As a contractor, you are in charge of protecting your workers. When it comes to fall protection, equipment isn't enough.

Training [Aug 2009]

For an organisation to be successful, it's critically important not to compromise the health and safety of its workforce or people affected by its activities, says Hazel Harvey, professional affairs director at IOSH. From senior managers to factory floor workers, all need to appreciate and understand their role in this. Senior managers, clearly, have to have a greater understanding of how poor health and safety performance will affect their business. But, workers, too, need to understand the immediate risks posed by the hazards they face during their working day.

UK’s New Work at Height Regulations

When they come into force The Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) will implement the Temporary Work at Height Directive in the UK. The key elements of the development approach taken by HSE in the drafting of the Regulations are outlined and analysed in this report.

The Heart of the Matter

Successfully protecting a workforce has moved beyond hard hats and rule books, says United Utilities. Health and safety has, quite rightly, worked its way onto and up the boardroom agenda over the last few years.
